It was believed at one time that the Suffolk Punch Horse ascended from the medieval "Great Horse" brought to England by William the Conqueror. They were originally developed for farm work, particularly in Norfolk and Suffolk in the east of England. Farmers bred them specifically for farming because of their endurance and willingness to work, so there weren't many on the market at first. They were also very often used in pulling competitions.
