The Dutch Warmblood has been selectively bred for soundness, good conformation and gaits, but also for excellent character and top performance. The term 'warmblood' reflects their combination. Two of the native breeds of the Netherlands, the Gelderlander and the heavy Groninger, provided a strong front and strong hindquarters. These slow, heavy cold-blooded horses were combined with the light and athletic 'warm-blooded' thoroughbreds, resulting in this strong, powerful warmblood with speed and endurance.
