Spotted eagle rays have flat disc-shaped bodies, deep blue or black with white spots on top with a white underbelly, and distinctive flat snouts that resemble a duck's beak. Their tails are longer than those of other rays and may have venomous spines. The front half of the long and wing-like thoracic disc has five small gills. Adult spotted eagle rays can be up to 5 meters long; the largest have a wingspan of up to 3 meters and a weight of 230 kg.
